Top of this list

NCM Milano Plus

The most battery at this price, but its load limit includes the bike, leaving about 98 kg for you.

Bikes legal with no end date in all eight and priced at $2,500 or less, largest battery first, then cheapest.

Pick another from the list below if its battery, weight or price doesn’t suit you. The model matcher ranks them for your own commute.

Its verdict in every state

Under $2,500 the bikes that pass everywhere are mostly hub-drive commuters from Leon Cycle, VelectriX and Aventon, plus one mid-drive from Reid. At this price the biggest difference between them is the battery, so this list puts the largest first.

Where the money goes above $2,500

Spend more and you mostly buy a mid-drive motor, which climbs better by working through the gears, and a bigger name on the frame. You don't buy a more legal bike: a $1,499 folder and a $5,900 cruiser can have exactly the same verdict.

Prices move

Several of these were on sale when we checked, with end dates: Leon's T3S and Paris sales end on 31 October 2026. We re-check prices monthly and show the date on every bike's page.
