Our verdict

Legal in 8 of 8 states and territories today

Road-legal in all eight states and territories, with nothing scheduled to change that. It's a 250 W folder whose motor helps only while you pedal, up to 25 km/h, plus a 6 km/h walk mode. At $1,499 it's the cheapest bike we list that passes everywhere.

NCM Paris verdict in each state

In all eight: Fits every state's 250 W pedal-assist class: 250 W rated, assistance stops by 25 km/h, no throttle above 6 km/h.

Not the right bike for your weight, trip or load? Pick another that is also legal where you ride. The model matcher ranks every bike we’ve checked for your state, weight and commute.

Why it gets these verdicts

The Paris and the dearer Paris+ look almost the same, and Leon puts them side by side on one spec table, but the law treats them very differently. The plain Paris has a walk mode only: hold a button and it rolls at 6 km/h. The Paris+ manual describes a throttle to 25 km/h, which no state allows. If you're choosing between the two, that's the deciding difference.

As with every Leon bike, the EN 15194 claim comes from a standards line Leon prints on each product page; its certification page adds a NSW Fair Trading certificate for the Paris series, approved for all states.

Who it suits

A folder suits a flat with no bike storage, a car boot, or a train leg on the commute. Two checks before you buy: the load limit leaves about 101 kg for rider and bags, and 20-inch wheels feel twitchier at speed than a full-size bike.

Leon also sells the Paris+, with a bigger battery and a throttle; read its page before choosing it, because the throttle changes the legal answer.
