Why it gets these verdicts

The Aspen is the clearest example of why the checker asks for rated power. The title of the product page lists '250W-750W' and the sale page promises 'up to 750W peak motor power'. A fat-tyre bike with 750 W would be illegal everywhere, NSW included. But the motor line reads 48 V, 250 W, maximum speed 25 km/h, and the rating is what the law measures.

The manual covers more than one market. It lists a throttle 'for NZ market', 300 W and an unrestricted top speed; the Australian bike is the 250 W, 25 km/h version with walk mode only. If you're buying second-hand, check the motor label says 250 W.

Walk mode moves the bike at 6 km/h; the throttle and 300 W motor listed in the manual are for the New Zealand market. (NCM Aspen owner's manual, checked )

Who it suits

Four-inch tyres float over sand and gravel fire trails, which is the reason to buy a fat bike. The cost is weight and load: the manual's 125 kg limit counts rider and bike together, leaving about 96 kg for you. That's the tightest of any fat bike we list.

If you're heavier, the Fatfish Biggie and VelectriX SUV carry more, and both are also legal everywhere.
