Ampd Bros ACE-X
Specs and price checked
Our verdict
Legal in 6 of 8 states and territories today, 4 with no end date
Legal in Victoria, SA, Tasmania and the ACT; legal for now in NSW and Queensland; not legal in WA or the NT. The road configuration is 250 W with a 6 km/h throttle, but Series 4 is certified to UL, not EN 15194.
Ampd Bros ACE-X verdict in each state
Ride in WA, NT? As its seller describes it, the ACE-X isn’t legal there today, so pick another bike. The model matcher ranks every bike we’ve checked for your state, weight and commute.
Two bikes on one page
Ampd sells the ACE-X in two factory configurations at one price: '250W Road Compliant' and an 'Off Road Model' that, in Ampd's words, does not comply with public road regulations. You choose at checkout and Ampd says it can't be changed later. Everything here is about the road version; the off-road one is illegal in every state.
The road version has the shape of a legal pedelec: 250 W continuous, pedal assistance to 25 km/h, throttle limited to 6 km/h walk assist. What it lacks is EN 15194. Ampd's compliance page says Series 4 bikes conform to UL standards and Series 5 to EN 15194. WA and the NT allow 250 W only with EN 15194, otherwise 200 W, so it fails there. Queensland lets it run until 28 February 2027, then wants a Legacy EPAC label. NSW's plan would end it in 2029.

Who it suits
With 65 Nm of torque and a 180 kg load rating, the ACE-X is built for bigger riders and sand. If you live in Victoria, SA, Tasmania or the ACT, the road version is legal with no end date.
In Queensland, WA or the NT, wait for the EN 15194 Series 5 or pick a certified fat bike such as the Fatfish Biggie. Never buy the off-road configuration for road use: it's illegal everywhere.

Legal in 6 of 8 states today
2 of those with an end date already set or announced.
- NSW: Legal today without EN 15194 certification, under NSW's current rules. From 1 March 2029 the NSW Government plans to require EN 15194 and a 250 W cap; a non-certified or 251–500 W bike would then need replacing. Announced, not yet law.
- VIC, SA, TAS, ACT: Fits each state's 250 W pedal-assist class: 250 W rated, assistance stops by 25 km/h, no throttle above 6 km/h. Each state's page doesn't require EN 15194 certification, though it's the easiest proof.
- QLD: Legal today without EN 15194 certification, under QLD's transition. From 1 March 2027 a non-certified bike needs a Legacy EPAC label from an authorised verifier (only bikes made before 1 July 2026, up to 250 W and 25 km/h, fee up to $70).
- WA, NT: Over 200 W and not certified to EN 15194, which each state requires for its 250 W class.
