Avanti Discovery-E Low

Our verdict
Legal in 6 of 8 states and territories today, 4 with no end date
Legal in Victoria, SA, Tasmania and the ACT; legal for now in NSW and Queensland; a check in WA and the NT. Shimano's E5000 is rated 250 W and set to 25 km/h for Australia, but Avanti's page doesn't name EN 15194.
Avanti Discovery-E Low verdict in each state
Ride in WA, NT? The rules there leave this bike open to a check, so confirm it with the state page before you buy. The model matcher ranks every bike we’ve checked for your state, weight and commute.
Why it gets these verdicts
Avanti prints a banner across its site: 'Due to a change in the legislation, consumers based in NSW can no longer purchase Avanti E-Bikes.' The change it most likely means is NSW Fair Trading's product-safety certification, required since 1 February 2026 for e-bikes sold in NSW. It stops sales, not riding: a Discovery-E bought before, or in another state, can still be ridden on NSW roads until the planned 2029 change.
The road-rule picture is the same as for other bikes whose sellers don't name EN 15194: a pass where certification isn't part of the rule, a dated pass in NSW and Queensland, and a check in WA and the NT until you see the label.

Who it suits
A low-step frame and a light Shimano mid-drive make this an easy everyday bike for flat-to-rolling suburbs. 40 Nm isn't much for steep streets, and 418 Wh limits range.
Avanti sells through dealers, so the RRP is a ceiling, not necessarily what you'll pay.

Avanti Discovery-E Low
Legal in 6 of 8 states today
2 of those with an end date already set or announced.
- NSW: Legal today without EN 15194 certification (or if you can't confirm it), under NSW's current rules. From 1 March 2029 the NSW Government plans to require EN 15194 and a 250 W cap; a non-certified or 251–500 W bike would then need replacing. Announced, not yet law. If it carries an EN 15194 label, it's legal with no end date.
- VIC, SA, TAS, ACT: Fits each state's 250 W pedal-assist class: 250 W rated, assistance stops by 25 km/h, no throttle above 6 km/h. Each state's page doesn't require EN 15194 certification, though it's the easiest proof.
- QLD: Legal today without EN 15194 certification (or if you can't confirm it), under QLD's transition. From 1 March 2027 a non-certified bike needs a Legacy EPAC label from an authorised verifier (only bikes made before 1 July 2026, up to 250 W and 25 km/h, fee up to $70). If it carries an EN 15194 label, it's legal with no end date.
- WA, NT: Legal only if it is certified to EN 15194, which each state requires for 250 W bikes. Look for the label or the certificate.
