Avanti Discovery-E Low vs Trek FX+ 2

Specs, prices and rules checked

The short answer

The Discovery-E Low and the FX+ 2 are level on legality and price

Identical verdicts: legal in Victoria, SA, Tasmania and the ACT, legal for now in NSW and Queensland, a check in WA and the NT, because neither page names EN 15194. Choose on the bike: the Avanti is a low-step mid-drive with more battery, the Trek a lighter-feeling hub hybrid in four sizes.

Pick the Discovery-E Low if you want an easy low-step frame, a little more battery and gearing help on hills, and you're not buying in NSW. Pick the FX+ 2 if you want a light, sporty hybrid in a size that fits, from 155 to 197 cm, and your trips are short.

Equal on legality and price, so the first bike gets the filled button.

Where they differ

Mid-drive against hub

Both list 40 Nm and 250 W. The Avanti's Shimano E5000 sits at the cranks and works through the gears, which helps on hills; the Trek's Hyena hub sits in the rear wheel and keeps the drivetrain simple.

Avanti lists 'Drive Unit: Shimano E5000, 40Nm, 250W, 25kph for AU'. (Avanti Bikes, checked )

Battery

The Avanti carries 418 Wh; the Trek 250 Wh, the smallest of any bike we list. Neither seller publishes a range. On the worst-case use other makers publish, the Trek would manage about 20 km and the Avanti about 33 km.

Trek lists a 250 Wh battery and a Hyena hub drive motor, 40 Nm, 250 W. (Trek Australia, checked )

Buying in NSW

Avanti says NSW consumers can no longer buy its e-bikes; Trek's page has no such notice. Both prices are the makers' own: $2,499.99 RRP for the Avanti, $2,499.99 on Trek's site, where most sizes were unavailable.

Avanti's banner: 'consumers based in NSW can no longer purchase Avanti E-Bikes.' (Avanti Bikes, checked )
