Our verdict
Legal in 0 of 8 states and territories today
Not legal in NSW, Victoria or Queensland, and a check everywhere else, because its display has a 'Road and Off Road Use' riding mode. On paper the motor is a legal 250 W with a 25 km/h top speed.
Smartmotion Renegade verdict in each state
Ride in NSW, VIC, QLD? As its seller describes it, the Renegade isn’t legal there today, so pick another bike. The model matcher ranks every bike we’ve checked for your state, weight and commute.
One switch changes the answer
Everything else on the Renegade's spec list reads like a legal bike: a 48 V 250 W rear motor and a top speed of 25 km/h. The problem is the display, listed with '2 Riding Modes: Road and Off Road Use'. The page doesn't say what Off Road changes, and Ride Electric's FAQ says the speed limits on bikes it sells 'can be removed for private property use'.
Victoria names toggle switches that override the limits as making a bike illegal. Queensland says a high-powered bike locked down by software is illegal, and NSW says the same about bikes capable of more than the limit. In those three the mode alone is enough. Elsewhere it is legal only while the mode stays off, and the states don't say whether owning the switch is an offence, so we show a check.

Who it suits
If you live in WA, SA, Tasmania, the ACT or the NT and will only ever ride in Road mode, the Renegade is a big-battery step-through fat bike for the price. Ask Ride Electric in writing what Off Road changes before you buy.
In the three eastern states, look at the Fatfish Biggie instead: also sold by Ride Electric, similar size and battery, and its page says its speed and throttle can't be adjusted.
